TMJ Treatment
Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD) refers to the disorders that affect the TMJ joint-the joint that joins the skull to the jaw. This disorder can often result in aches or pain, jaw problems, migraines, and/or earaches. TMJD can be triggered by many things, including, but not limited to:
- Jaw or TMJ trauma
- Dislocation of the jaw
- Jaw clenching
- Arthritis
- Stress
- Teeth grinding
- Bite misalignment
- Bad posture
- Illness or disease
Not all symptoms of TMJD seem to relate to your jaw, making this disorder occasionally difficult to self-diagnose. Some symptoms of TMJD include:
- A ‘clicking’ or ‘popping’ sound when closing or opening the mouth
- Trouble chewing, opening, or closing the mouth
- Prevalent jaw pain or soreness
- Toothaches not caused by either infection or other dental problems
- Earaches not caused by infection
- Pain in your jaw when biting, yawning, chewing, or speaking
- Recent bite changes
- A stiff or locked jaw when chewing, yawning, biting, or speaking
- Recurring migraines or tension headaches, especially upon waking
